The National Cancer Research Network (RNCC) is a crucial and innovative initiative in Romania, with a well-defined purpose: improving the management of patients affected by cancer. This network is a broad and significant collaboration between public institutions and private companies in the health and information sectors, which have joined forces to make significant progress in cancer research and management.
This initiative, under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Patriciu Achimaș-Cadariu, has as its central objective the development and implementation of a Competence Centre in the field of cancer, with a particular emphasis on improving the management of patients affected by this disease. RNCC aims to use advances in personalised medicine, telemedicine, molecular tumour characterisation, imaging systems and artificial intelligence through integrative research to improve the diagnosis, treatment and care of cancer patients.
This remarkable coalition has developed through collaboration between five public research organisations (the Oncology Institute "Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță" in Cluj-Napoca, the "Carol Davila" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Bucharest, the Polytechnic University of Bucharest, the "Grigore T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Iași and the "Victor Babeș" Institute) and six private companies (Sfântul Nectarie - Oncology Centre, Kol Medical Media, Oncohelp Timișoara, Oncomed, Netvibes and Med Life). This collaboration between the public and private sectors is a compelling demonstration of the shared commitment to making significant progress in the fight against cancer.
RNCC Objectives
The National Cancer Research Network (RNCC) has committed to bringing about significant change in the fight against cancer in Romania. To achieve this ambitious objective, RNCC has defined five key objectives, known as Development and Innovation Components (CDI), which reflect a firm commitment to improving patient management, cancer prevention and early detection, development of the research network and improvement of the healthcare experience.
This component focuses on improving oncology centres by implementing elements of excellence in areas such as personalised medicine, telemedicine, molecular tumour characterisation and imaging systems. The ultimate goal is to improve the treatment and management of cancer patients.
This objective focuses on cancer prevention and the development of personalised strategies for patients affected by various types of malignant tumours in adults and children, by understanding the determinants of the disease. The goal is to increase the survival rate and quality of life of patients.
This objective highlights the importance of developing and consolidating the cancer research network to support researchers in Romania in the fight against this disease.
This component focuses on developing interventions to improve healthcare and the quality of life of patients who benefit from oncology and palliative care services. The goal is to ensure that patients receive adequate treatment and support.
This objective aims to standardise and automate the process of early diagnosis and predictive testing in colorectal cancer, in order to reduce the time to final results and optimise treatment.
